Fish and Chips [Complete] « Thread Started on Jan 1, 2012, 12:37pm »
((3 Cloudreach, evening. Evelyn and Iain’s house, Highever))
Humming not so quietly and not really to himself, Iain selected another fish from the mysterious parcel Andy had thrust upon him at the castle that morning.
Can you cook this like Gerry does? the knight had asked. Not knowing what Andy meant – not an unusual circumstance – Iain had peeked inside the wrapped paper and stared at the clear but dead eye of a fish. As he contemplated his reflection, Andy flipped one hand out in vague gesture and mentioned crispy skin, but not skin, then scratched his head and frowned. Fried in ale? he offered at last, as if the requesting the impossible.
Frown clearing, Iain confirmed he did know how to batter and fry fish. Andy then informed him he would be bringing Blythe and another guest around for dinner – another not so unusual circumstance – and added that he’d bring some ale. Iain clapped the younger man on the shoulder and said the only thing he could, See you then.
He didn’t mind, not really. Andy and Evelyn were best friends and he liked seeing them spend time together. Iain also liked the younger Kincade, and he enjoyed observing the similarities and differences between Blythe and Evelyn. And, he liked the way the three folks from Edgewater included him in their family. He felt comfortable with them. As for Andy’s guest, it might be anyone, from one of these golems the younger knight rambled on about to the King of Ferelden, himself.
Putting aside a nicely cleaned and filleted fish, Iain tossed a head onto the floor for Socks to play with and reached inside the parcel for the next.

Evelyn had already cleaned up the laboratory equipment some time before. She’d wanted to help Iain get ready for their company that evening. So, as he worked on cooking, Evelyn swept up and tidied around the main room of the house and the kitchen. She even went so far as to wash the laboratory table off somewhat and dust the books she could reach. She figured Blythe and Andy didn’t mind, or notice, the dust and random objects scattered around the house, but they had a guest coming. She wanted to have the house ready for their new guest.
The house hadn’t been bad, thanks to Iain’s regular care of the place, so Evelyn had finished up in good time. With that done, she decided to wash up and fix her hair, then put on a dress for the evening. She selected her blue dress, the one that matched her eyes, for the evening. It was nice looking without being too formal, she thought, so hopefully she wouldn’t be overdressed for their company.
Once she was attired for the evening, she went to the kitchen to see Iain’s progress. “Can I help with anything?” she asked the incredibly handsome man who was busy working with fish and flour and various other things, knowing that she would be less than helpful for anything food-oriented. Still, she thought he appreciated her asking to help anyway.

Kira awoke at dawn, filled with trepidation. She had an appointment with Sargent Bydder, in about two candles, to talk about her recent experiences.
Maker, we were simply serving as guard for the Envoy. I can’t believe, I am even considering leaving the Guard, much less staying in Highever. All right, buck up Sutharlan and start practicing what you’re going to say.
She stood in front of her armor stand, feeling daft, but she hoped it would help her focus.
“Sergeant… I…I… um…need to tell you…?”
Kira put her hand to her forehead, shaking her head. Maker’s sake, I’m stammering in front the bloody armor stand.
Stretching her neck a bit and swinging her arms, she again faced the stand.
“I want to leave the guard and stay in Highever...”
Kira hung her head. No preamble, just spill it out? Brilliant Kira.
“Sergeant, you know how I’ve been…um… how I’ve felt…
She hung her head. “shit."
Kira paced the barracks, running her hand through her hair enough that it was starting to look wild. She didn’t even notice. After a minute of pacing she stopped and looked to the ceiling. “Ok, forget practicing. He knows the problems I’ve had. He knows how I’ve been feeling. I just need to be myself.”
Now there’s a depressing thought.
At the appointed time, Kira was sitting in a chair in the small room that Sergeant Bydder had been using as an office.
When the sergeant walked in, Kira stood at attention. “Sergeant.”
“At ease, private. Take a seat.
Kira waited until her Sergeant sat down, before sitting.
“How have you been enjoying your leave, Sutharlan?”
“Very much, Sergeant. I’ve met a Knight of Highever, Ser Andrew Banvard. I have been through the marketplace and even went fishing last night with him. Tonight Ser Andrew and his Lady are taking me to dinner at a friend’s home.”
Bydder eyed Kira. He knew how tough it had been for her in Gwaren. She had seen a lot and had been subjected to very…unfortunate behavior, the wet fish being the least of the things Kira endured. She never talked about it, never complained, always turned out. She is a bright; caring very capable young woman. He had tried to get the Knight-Captain to listen, to no avail. a more nug-stubborn man I have never seen. The Knight-Captain had told Bydder to bring Kira along. Why, was a mystery, unless…he was hoping she would die along the way. No even Knight-captain Darmat is that much of a bastard.
“Sounds like people of good character, Sutharlan. So what brings you here today?”
Kira took a deep breath, looking at her hands then meeting the Sergeant’s eyes. “I have found how different the Highever Guard is from Gwaren’s. Highever has made so much progress; the people are warm and welcoming. I...I feel like…well like this could be home.”
Bydder blinked and was quiet. His voice was low. “What are you asking me, Sutharlan?”
“Sergeant, I…I would like to speak to the Knight-Captain, here, about joining the Highever guard. Staying here, relinquishing my position with the Gwaren Guard.”
She was waiting for Andy to pick her up, so she was looking out the window of the same tavern they met at last night. Thinking back on her talk with Bydder, she smiled, she felt free. Even if she wasn’t accepted into the guard, she might just stay here anyway. Sergeant Bydder didn’t seem and all surprised, and in fact was happy if she could find a “better environment.”
Kira looked at her mug and chuckled. And I thought they brought me along because they were going to promote me. The Knight-Captain had made the Sergeant take me. To give the Knight-Captain all credit, he may have hoped that I would prefer life here.”

All day, Andy had looked forward to the evening.
He liked fish, he liked it a lot, and since his arrival in Highever, had enjoyed eating the ocean varieties they rarely saw in Edgewater. In particular, he liked Gerry’s recipe, fish that had been fried until it had a crispy crust. He had no idea how the man enticed the fish to turn a golden, crunchy brown, but he liked it! When he approached Iain with his parcel of perch, he’d asked if the blonde knight knew how to do the same thing. When he said he did, calling it battered and fried, Andy immediately leapt to the conclusion the fish would suffer some sort of trauma before being dipped in hot oil. Did the cook whack it against the table or something? Did repeated blows produce the crust? Or maybe something oozed out of the fish, something that then turned a golden brown when fried.
Shaking his head, Andy thrust his parcel of fish at Iain and invited himself, Blythe and Kira for dinner. He planned to arrive early enough to witness the beating of the fish, it would be interesting, right? Even if sort of weird.
After collecting a cask of ale from Gerry, which involved lingering in the kitchen with the urge to ask how he did his fish, just so he could be knowledgeable when he turned up at Evie’s, Andy left the kitchen none the wiser. Gerry had looked a little rushed and not quite in the mood for questions.
Next he collected Blythe, kissed her thoroughly, then said, "Hello." He grinned stupidly at her for a moment, still in awe of the fact she would soon be his wife. Then he enquired after Lily-or-Daniel. Putting his hand carefully on her belly, he asked, "Is my family well today?"
Cask of ale tucked under his arm, Cal's lead looped about that hand and Blythe's fingers caught inside the other, Andy led his family out into Highever.
The sun skimmed the horizon when he and Blythe reached the market place, casting deeper shadows between patches of bright, orange light. Taking advantage of a nicely shaded corner, Andy bent down to catch Blythe’s lips in a quick kiss. “One,” he whispered before tugging her back into the light. Andy grinned as he squeezed Blythe’s hand, happy to be walking next to his soon to be wife, happy about the noticeable lump at her middle, happy about the new friend waiting for them in the Green Spears and happy about visiting Evie and Iain. It seemed as if all his troubles had just floated away.
Opening the door of the inn, he waved to Kira and beckoned her out into the market place. He'd rather not take Cal into the tavern if he didn't have to. The puppy got all together too excited around lots of new people.
“Hello, Kira," he said when she joined them. "How was your day?”

Blythe was looking forward to this. A meal with Iain and Evelyn and her fiancée, as well as Kira; despite the fact that they hadn’t talked for very long the only time they had met, Blythe had decided she liked the Gwaren guard. Plus, Iain was doing the cooking, so there wouldn’t be any explosions to worry about. She still hadn’t taken much training from Iain on how to cook properly, something that she should probably get around to before she and Andy started having to cook for themselves. It probably wouldn’t be good for Lily if she gave herself food poisoning.
Andy picked her up from their room, cask of ale in hand, and a passionate kiss as a hello. Blythe liked this version of hello, and returned Andy’s grin just as widely as they looked at each other for a moment before Andy rested his hand on her belly. “Is my family well today?”
“Alive and kicking. Literally. Lily’s been very active today, I think she’s getting impatient to get out and see the world!” Sometimes the kicking did get tiring (and slightly disruptive – Blythe had learned not to rest food on her belly unless she wanted it to flu everywhere), but Blythe was happy with it. It was clear confirmation that their daughter or son was doing really well in there.
Together their little band of three-plus-sort-of-one half set out. The weather was definitely getting warmer and it was a lovely day, with the sun lending a warm glow to everything. This also had the effect of deepening some of the shadows, enough for Andy to get the first stealth-kiss in of the day. Blythe grinned, squeezing his hand in return, and waited until they were just in front of the Green Spears to take one for herself. They weren’t the least bit cloaked in shadow but as far as she was aware nobody was watching them at that exact moment. “Two.”
They were only in the inn for a moment, long enough to spot Kira and beckon her out to the marketplace. Andy took care of the greetings. “Hi Kira. How was your day?”
Blythe greeted the other woman as well and listened to the woman’s answer as they made their way along to Evie and Iain’s house. Without having to push their way through the usual crowds in the marketplace at this hour, it took less time than usual, and before long they were standing outside. Blythe knocked at the door, resisting the urge to bounce on her toes again, but making no effort to dim her smile at the prospect of an evening spent with a group of people she knew and liked.

“Can I help with anything?”
Iain looked up to find Evelyn had entered the kitchen. She had brushed her hair and put on her blue dress and looked...
“Ravishing,” he said with a grin. Wiggling his fishy fingers, he reached for her, eyes glinting with mischief. “If I got slimy, fishy fingers all over your nice dress, you’d have to take it off.” He nodded encouragingly. Getting Evelyn’s dress off wouldn’t help with dinner, but it would be all sorts of fun. They had guests coming, though, and even if Andy had a habit of undressing his girlfriend in the kitchen, Iain didn’t think the mystery guest would appreciate a half naked hostess. Well, actually, they might, but then Iain would have to deck whoever they were for looking.
Realising Evelyn had no idea he’d just mentally undressed her and defended her honor, Iain tucked his hands behind him and leaned forward to give her a sweet kiss. Leaning back, he regarded her with the smile he reserved just for her, then blinked as if he’d lost himself in her loveliness, which he had.
He wiped his hands on the rag he kept on the table and indicated the sack of potatoes. “I thought I’d show you how to fry them to go with the fish, if you’re up for it.”
A moment later, a knock sounded at the door. “Do you want to get that?” Iain asked. “If I leave the fish unattended for more than a breath, Socks will claim it for his own.”

When Iain reached slimy-looking fingers toward her with a look that screamed ‘I’m up to no good’ in his eyes, Evelyn took an involuntary step backward. She was laughing, but he was definitely threatening to get ‘fishy fingers’ all over her clean dress and that simply wouldn’t do! After a moment, Iain took pity on her and hid his hands behind his back as he leaned forward for a kiss. Evelyn couldn’t help but oblige him, and despite the slimy digits that she knew were only a couple of feet away, she forgot about them as Iain’s kiss made her forget about everything.
Iain pulled away gently, and Evelyn leaned forward as if to follow, then blinked confusedly. What were they up to again? Iain wiped his hands on a rag and mentioned something about helping him with potatoes, and she murmured, “Oh, right,” as her mind started to work again. She blinked again, then smiled up at him. “I would love-”
A knock sounded at the door. Evelyn blinked again, this time as she remembered the rest. Iain was cooking dinner because they had guests! Iain asked her to get the door so that he could protect the fish from Socks, and Evelyn laughed. “I’ll be happy to,” she agreed, and walked out of the kitchen toward the front door.
She opened the door to see her youngest sister, Andy, and a woman she hadn’t met yet. She assumed this was their additional guest for dinner and invited all of them in. “Hello! Come in, please.” She smiled brightly and stepped aside to let in the trio. “Can I take any jackets or cloaks? Oh, and I’m Evelyn.” She put out a hand to shake the new person’s as she introduced herself. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Kira hadn’t brought anything suitable for a lady attending a dinner party, and her uniform was too formal. So she resorted to her light-weight tan gambeson, which she wore under a dark leather jerkin, with her best pair of trousers and her boots, which she had recently cleaned. Her short red hair had dried on the way from her barracks to the Inn. She felt presentable for a man, but under-dressed for a woman.
My brother would be laughing himself sick if he knew I was concerned about my appearance.
When out of uniform, Kira simply opt for what was clean and mended. [/i]
She saw Andy and Blythe before they got to the door, Andy was carrying a cask and was holding the lead of what looked to be a puppy. Andy opened the door and waved for her to come out. Kira quickly went to the door.
Andy looked very happy.
Why not? He has the woman he loves, his unborn child, a cask of Ale and a puppy. For many people that is as good as it needs to get.
Kira was genuinely happy for Andy. She thought him to be one of the kindest people she had met, and it was clear to see that the Andraste was rewarding his kindness ten-fold.
Andy had asked after her day. Kira smiled at the obviously happy couple. ”Eventful, but in a good way. Hi Blythe, how are you feeling?” She looked down at the puppy. “And who might you be?”
Blythe replied and Kira was introduced to the puppy as they walked to Ser Iain’s house.
Kira thought she remembered that Ser Iain’s lady was Blythe’s sister, but she wasn’t sure and the woman that opened the door didn't help. She was maybe a half-foot shorter than Blythe, with black hair and blue eyes, while Blythe’s hair was red, and her eyes hazel.
But her smile seemed to be just as warm and welcoming as her Blythe’s and it put Kira at ease. The woman invited them in. “Can I take any jackets or cloaks? Oh, and I’m Evelyn.”
Kira shook hands with Evelyn. “Pleased to meet you, Evelyn; my name is Kira Sutharlan. I thank you and Ser Iain for including me in your dinner party.

Kira’s day had been eventful, that didn’t sound good. Without elaborating, she mentioned it had been a good sort of eventful. Andy nodded; it wouldn’t be polite to press for details. The guardswoman then asked after Blythe’s health before noticing Cal.
“This is Calenhad,” Andy said. Hearing his name, Cal looked up from his inspection of Kira’s boots and offered a friendly bark.
When they got to Evie’s house, Blythe knocked while Andy tightened his hold on Cal’s lead. No doubt, the puppy could already smell Socks. Cal was reasonably well behaved around the cat, but the day Andy relaxed his guard would be the day the pair played chase through the laboratory and emerged with blue fur. Evelyn answered the door looking very pretty in a blue dress. She welcomed them in, offered to take their coats and introduced herself to Kira. Taking the offered hand, Kira introduced herself in turn and thanked Evelyn and ‘Ser Iain’ for the invitation. Andy had the good grace to blush slightly while nibbling his lip. He then took a turn at greeting his best friend, giving her a quick and only slightly awkward hug, as had become their new custom.
“Thanks for having us over,” he murmured quietly.
Cal strained against his lead and Andy followed the puppy toward the kitchen. Once there, he set the small cask of ale down and said hello to Iain. He then noticed the blonde knight had already cleaned and sliced the fish.
“Have you done the beating yet?” he asked curiously, looking over the small, innocuous looking pieces.
A flash of fur whizzed past their legs and Cal yipped once and tried to follow the cat. Glancing down, Andy said, “Sit, Cal.” Obediently, the puppy sat. His entire body continued to lean toward the doorway, however.

Kira looked very cheerful about being included in their gathering, greeting them both and enquiring after Blythe’s health, after stating that her day had been eventful. “I’m well, Kira,” Blythe smiled. “Looking forward to dinner. Iain’s a great cook, it’ll be delicious. How was your day eventful?” Hopefully not ‘kidnapped by rogues and having to fight the way out of a dockside warehouse’ eventful. There was such a thing as too much excitement. Fortunately, Kira definitely didn’t have the look of somebody who’d recently escaped slavery by the skin of their teeth, so Blythe assumed all was well.
She let Andy handle the introduction to Cal, who was snuffling around Kira’s boots in his version of hello, and who cocked an ear at the sight of his name. Blythe really should be immune to his charms by now but the temptation to pick him up, cuddle him, and feed him whatever treat he whined in the direction of was still overwhelming. And he knew it all too well, damn him.
When they reached Evie and Iain’s place, Evie answered the door, looking in high spirits, offering to take their cloaks and greeting Kira warmly. The guardswoman shook her sister’s hand. “Pleased to meet you, Evelyn; my name is Kira Sutharlan. I thank you and Ser Iain for including me in your dinner party.”
Andy gave Evie a quick hug and Blythe gave her a longer one, probably squashing Lily a bit in the process. The tummy was really getting in the way now. “How’ve you been, Evie?”
Her fiancée trotted off in the direction of the kitchen with Cal in tow, and Blythe took up her usual space on Aloysius, which looked very clean and presentable and not at all as though it had been witness to deeds of vice and inequity.
Blythe had read that phrase in a book recently and decided she liked it. Deeds of vice and inequity sounded fun.
Mindful of their guest, she refrained from sprawling across it as usual, and waited for the other two to join her, or not, before speaking up again. “Not long now until the teyrn’s wedding, right? The merchants in the market are already making a big song and dance about it.”

From the kitchen it sounded as if Andy’s guest might be human, or somewhere close to it. Iain chuckled at the idea he might actually have been expecting something supernatural. It didn’t surprise him that Andy had a new friend, the young knight seemed to know everyone in Highever. He would reserve judgment on the guests ‘normalcy’ until he met them, though.
The young knight, himself, soon wandered into the kitchen, or followed Cal in there. They exchanged a quick greeting and Iain bent to give the puppy a quick pat on the head. Dogs usually made him uncomfortable, but Cal he liked. In fact, Iain defied anyone not to be swayed by floppy ears, large brown eyes and a ground sweeping belly. Cal wasn’t a dog, he was cute personified.
“Have you done the beating yet?” Andy was leaning over the fish.
Frowning at the question, Iain answered, “No.” Assuming Andy meant the batter, he elaborated. “If you over-mix the batter it gets tough,” he flicked a hand, “chewy. Not crispy. We’ll make it while the oil is heating. You want to help?”
Noting Cal seemed more interested in Socks’ departure than his master’s impromptu cooking lesson, Iain nodded toward the pantry. “I got Cal a treat,” he said. “Or a bribe.” He grinned and wandered over to collect the small parcel of scraps he’d picked up to keep the puppy entertained. They’d let the small dog gorge himself and pass out. Bit like Andy, really. Maybe man and puppy would curl up together on Aloysius after dinner. Wouldn’t be the first time.
After they had Cal taken care of, Iain gestured the bag of potatoes. “You want to peel those ad slice them into fingers?” He turned back to finish cleaning the fish. “So who is your guest?” he asked over his shoulder. “I’ll wander out and say hello once I wash fish guts off my hands. No one wants to shake a slimy, smelling hand.”

Evelyn received a hand in response to her offer and was introduced to Andy and Blythe’s friend by the friend herself. Kira was a pretty name, wasn’t it? The woman had come wearing a smart looking breeches outfit and Evelyn smiled at the gratitude expressed for the invitation. This Kira seemed quite nice! “We’re glad you could come. Please, make yourself comfortable.” She smiled and indicated the couches. “We don’t have a great many seats, but there’s enough room for everybody.”
Andy and Blythe both hugged Evelyn before coming in the rest of the way, and Evelyn gladly returned their greetings. It felt so odd to have to lean forward to hug her sister, what with the bump on Blythe’s abdomen growing larger every time Evelyn saw her. Still, both Andy and Blythe looked happy, healthy and content, and that was all Evelyn could ask. After they entered the house, Andy wandered off to the kitchen and Blythe took a seat on Aloysius. Evelyn smiled at Kira and then answered Blythe’s question. “I’m doing really well. Thank you for asking. How are you feeling?” She smiled across the room at her sister. “You look wonderful, by the way. Very healthy. Let me know if you start having any problems with your feet or ankles swelling, and I can help with that.”
Blythe mentioned the teyrn’s approaching wedding and how the merchants were getting ready for the extra business that would come their way. “Yes, it’s going to be a huge event,” Evelyn confirmed. “Are you going to the ceremony itself, Blythe?” She turned to Kira so that their guest wouldn't feel left out. “Andy mentioned you were a guardswoman, correct? Will you be working at the wedding then? I think both Andy and Iain have to work guard duty that day. I’d be surprised if there were any guards or knights not working with all the dignitaries who will probably be here.”

Kira was happy to hear that Blythe was doing well. She knelt down and extended her hand for Calenhad to smell. “It’s nice to meet you, Calenhad; you have quite the name.” After a moment or two, she gave him a light scratch behind his ear and stroked his back.
Maker, I love dogs! They are really companions, not at all like cats.
Blythe had asked, "How was your day eventful?”
Kira was unsure how to answer her question. After a bit of thought, Kira stood up and looked at Blythe as they began to walk. “I had a… long and productive talk with my sergeant this morning.”
It was long all right. I was with Bydder for two hours, which is an event in itself. It was good because now I know where I stand; the Knight-Captain is hoping I’ll leave. The kick of it all is that this has nothing to do with my abilities. This is because as a fairly attractive woman, it made the other guards feel uncomfortable. Can’t make the male guards too uncomfortable you know.
For Kira it made the thought of staying in Highever and joining their guard, even more appealing, however at this point, she didn’t feel safe going back.
They arrived at Evelyn’s house they were being welcomed in as Kira was introduced. Kira felt that Evelyn was very warm and welcoming and quickly felt at ease. Watching the sisters hug each other, as they negotiated around Blythe’s stomach, made her smile,
Not a few seconds in the door, Cal, who probably smelled food, had decided he wanted to go to, what Kira assumed would be the kitchen, leaving Andy no choice, but to follow him.
The sisters were asking after the other, and Evelyn told Blythe that she looked wonderful and that she can help with any foot or ankle swelling.
Was Evelyn a healer?
Evelyn had invited them to have a seat and make themselves more comfortable. Kira saw Blythe immediately go to what she assumed was her usual seat. Once Kira and Evelyn found seats. Blythe and her sister started to talk about the upcoming wedding of Teyrn Cousland.
“Not long now until the teyrn’s wedding, right? The merchants in the market are already making a big song and dance about it.”
Kira kept silent as she had little to contribute, but she found it fun to just listen. Then Evelyn turned to Kira, telling her that Andy had mentioned that she was a guardswoman. “Will you be working at the wedding then? “
Why do I think have the sinking suspicion that this going to turn into an awkward moment?
Kira cheeks became pink. She looked at her hands then at Evelyn. “I…uh…am not a member of the Highever guard. I’m from the Gwaren guard.”

Iain did not answer the question to Andy’s satisfaction. Rather than describe how the fish were flattened, bruised or otherwise pummeled into submission, he talked about something called batter, which, if over-mixed, became chewy. Andy began to think they were considering two entirely different recipes. But, Iain knew how to cook and, with the exception of stew (recipe and instructions provided by Iain), Andy did not.
After fetching a treat for Cal – the puppy dived in nose first – Iain pointed out a sack of potatoes and asked if Andy wanted to peel them and slice them into... fingers. Before Andy could question the instruction, Iain turned back to the fish and asked about their guest.
“She’s a guardswoman from Gwaren. Kira Sutharlan. She came to Highever with the envoy. Blythe and I showed her about town a bit, then I invited her to fish off the docks last night.” Andy grinned at the small pile of fish. “We did well, eh? She comes from a fishing family, though I think the fact she paid more attention to her line than I did probably accounts for her success.” Chuckling, Andy spilled potatoes across the table and selected one at random. As he began cutting the skin away, he told Iain about the fish that got away. “We’d have had to invite half of Highever over to eat if she’d caught that one.” His knife paused against the potato. “Thanks for this, by the way. Kira is thinking of staying in Highever, joining the guard up here, so I thought she’d like to meet more people.”
Andy smiled over at Iain. In Edgewater, such invitations (on behalf of others) were rarely extended. People just turned up. One night dinner might mean a small family gathering, the next it might mean half the town sitting at long tables hastily erected across the yard, particularly after a successful catch. Andy knew Iain came from a small town as well, but the blonde knight had grown up in Highever, where things were probably a bit more formal.
Looking down at his potatoes, he asked, “Er, so what did you mean about fingers?”

Evie welcomed them all in, sparing a smile for Kira, who as Blythe gathered had never met her sister before. Blythe let them talk a moment before hugging her sister and asking after her health, although she didn’t really need to ask. Evie looked really well, and happy, which was the most important thing. Apparently she appeared in good form as well, and thankfully she spared her the ‘glowing’ comparison. Not that Blythe minded the word so much, but she heard it nearly every time somebody struck up a conversation with her these days. “Let me know if you start having any problems with your feet or ankles swelling, and I can help with that.”
Blythe looked down at her feet (with some difficulty). “I think they’re fine at the moment. And I’m pretty good. Getting slower, but I could probably still trip Andy up in the practice yard. If only by rolling under his feet.” She grinned.
In the interest of getting some conversation in that they could all contribute to, Blythe bought up the upcoming wedding, mentioning that the merchants seemed to have already got themselves in a flap. Evie concurred, before asking if Blythe was attending the ceremony. She nodded.
“Yes, I’ve been invited. I’m getting a dress specially made, which must be a first.” She turned her head towards Kira, a mischievous grin pulling at her lips. “Normally it’s other people getting a dress made specially for me and then having to chase me down and pin me in order to get me to wear it.”
Evie had also looked towards their guest. “Andy mentioned you were a guardswoman, correct? Will you be working at the wedding then? I think both Andy and Iain have to work guard duty that day. I’d be surprised if there were any guards or knights not working with all the dignitaries who will probably be here.”
Kira looked a little awkward. “I…uh…am not a member of the Highever guard. I’m from the Gwaren guard.”
“Well, if you want an in, you could volunteer your services for a day,” Blythe suggested to avoid the three of them lapsing into silence. “They’re short a guard anyway, I know that for certain.” She smiled again and pointed at herself. “I think the Sergeant would be a bit reluctant to let me do guard duty on the day even if I wasn’t invited. He might be getting two guards for the price of one but it’s not worth it if I can’t run anywhere. I could put in a word for you, if you liked?”
