"Are you all right? I'm sorry about that. I don't remember Felicity being quite so...direct. Manipulative, yes, but...I don't know, maybe I just never saw that side of her."
Jenna took another sip of the cider before replying. "I'm fine, wasn't expecting the...situation from Rory to be pulled out. Hardly the first time I've been poked, prodded, and otherwise verbally attacked though. Perhaps you just haven't seen her so angry? Women like that know how to manipulate men but women are the enemy, period. She didn't see me as a threat originally, which was rather insulting. Though I guess I can't blame her for that. Woman built like that would hardly think of someone like me as competition."
That thought had her raising a hand to tug at a curl nervously. Curiosity poking at her now as she played everything back in her head. Felicity was gorgeous, Jenna could admit that without qualm. A gorgeous and willing woman who had once been friendly enough to be...something more with Aedan. He admitted himself he did casual relationships not one night stands. He had to of cared and liked Felicity at some point. So...why did he pick Jenna, or had he even picked? Maybe it was one of those Cousland drummed in duty things. No there had been honest dislike and repulsion in him during things.
She didn't have any way of knowing his thought pattern here without asking. He might not like her doing that though. Jenna was nervous about trying to come to a conclusion on her own though, colored by the rest of the day.
"I-if...I could ask...unless you don't want to answer. I just... Annoying twig, as you have liked to call me, that broke your nose not to long ago. Gorgeous woman you got along with at one point and hadn't seen in a long while."
Maker she sounded like a fool, probably looked like on two holding a steaming mug in one hand and twining the uncovered fingers of another in her hair like a nervous chit.

Jenna provided a rather concise analysis of Felicity's behavior, and Aedan had to concur with it. She was the expert in the field of how women related to one another, after all. The idea that Felicity hadn't seen Jenna as competition seemed to bother her, though, if the twirling of a curl between her fingers was any indication.
"I-if...I could ask..." she began hesitantly. "Unless you don't want to answer. I just... Annoying twig, as you have liked to call me, that broke your nose not to long ago. Gorgeous woman you got along with at one point and hadn't seen in a long while."
Aedan waited for a moment, expecting her to continue and ask an actual question, but whatever impulse that had prompted Jenna to voice those words seemed to have deserted her. He just watched her for a moment, those nervous fingers getting more and more tangled in the ebony lock.
He reached forward and plucked her hand away from her hair, and brushed his thumb over her knuckles. His hands were no longer gloved, since he'd removed the wool to feel the heat of the cider through the mug more keenly. He let his thumb rub across her knuckles again, his eyes on hers.
No pressure, Soap. No pressure. He wanted to kiss her, to show her the answer to her question. Because no one had ever quite captivated him the way she did. There was a strength to her that few women of his acquaintance had had; a willingness to stand up and do what was needed, what was right, despite it not necessarily being what she wanted. She was a good woman. A strong, good, just woman, similar to Morrigan, but so very, very different.
Morrigan had been dark, and he'd known it from the beginning. She was ruthless, doing what needed to be done despite the cost to others. Strong, yes, but strong for herself, not her people.
It was a fundamental difference. Jenna would always do what was right for the people in her care—she'd already proven that. Women like Morrigan, or Felicity Brewer (on a much, much smaller scale) wanted only what they wanted, and cared nothing for other people's hopes, dreams, wishes, desires.
Morri had proved it. It had taken him this long to really see it, though.
Slowly, he brought Jenna's hand to his lips and pressed a soft, barely there kiss to her knuckles. "Because, Jenna, you are far, far more interesting than any woman who thought that 'Danny' was an appropriate nickname for me."
There was more to it than that. Much more. He thought. He didn't want to look at it too closely, not yet, so he snatched the nearly empty mug from her hand and smiled, pushing any persistent questions about what he thought, felt, wanted, or needed from his mind.
"I promised you more fun, my lady." He smiled, that crooked smile that was quickly becoming reserved for her alone. "Are you ready?"

Jenna felt warm fingers pluck her own out of her hair. A thumb dragging over her knuckles and sending these little shivers through her blood. She found herself caught in those eyes though. That spark she had thought she'd seen before was definitely there. Banked, reined in for reasons she didn't know.
Slowly, Aedan brought Jenna's hand to his lips and pressed a soft, barely there kiss to her knuckles. "Because, Jenna, you are far, far more interesting than any woman who thought that 'Danny' was an appropriate nickname for me."
Something swelled in her chest at his words and Jenna could only stare. Blinking green eyes that were a little wider in understanding, lips slightly parted as her brain tried to remind her to breathe. She might have been naive in some things but she didn't need Aedan to spell it out with oil and fire for her this time. Everything simply clicked into place like the pieces of a puzzle.
He still wanted her. It was like a small miracle to her that he would still and she had no idea what to say.
Thankfully she didn't need to say anything as he smiled, that crooked one that made her so giddy. "I promised you more fun, my lady. Are you ready?"
Mental images of a very different kind of fun popped into Jenna's head. She might have had thoughts here and there (not that she would ever admit them) but usually they didn't feature a particular person. This time she could almost taste the lemon, smell the sandalwood, hear her name...
She definitely could feel the heat of her thoughts and knew she was turning very red in the face. She was pretty sure Aedan hadn't meant that particular brand of fun here. After all, while she knew how he felt, he didn't know how she did. Jenna wasn't quite sure how to tell him either but in the middle of a festival was certainly not the place for it.
"Ah-hmm..." she managed to get out, clearing her throat and trying to calm the thoughts of tangling limbs. "I think so...was there anything else you wanted to look for? Old friends to look up? More songs you wanted to dance to?"

Jenna blushed quite brilliantly at him kissing her knuckles, which was rather surprising. He'd flustered her before by being gentlemanly, but she'd always shrugged it off. Not this time. Now, a rosy flush rose from her neck to beneath the rim of her new hat, but Aedan, in full gentleman mode (for the moment) didn't mention it.
"Ah-hmm..." Jenna cleared her throat, then tried once more to respond to his question. "I think so...was there anything else you wanted to look for? Old friends to look up? More songs you wanted to dance to?"
"No, my lady," Aedan said. "Nothing more to look for, no old friends to see, and no more dancing...though maybe later." He pulled on his mitts once more, then secured his hat and scarf before reaching for her hand again. "And no, I'm not going to tell you what we're doing, not yet. You'll have to trust me."
His grin straightened a bit, full of boyish anticipation, and he pulled her along after him again. He knew exactly where to go, though, of course, Jenna had no idea. And that was just fine. Because no matter her protests, they would do this.
They reached the hill and Aedan's lips twisted. Damn it, no snow. Although...it didn't seem to have stopped any of the kids from grabbing old shields, brought out from the castle armory for just such a purpose, and sliding down the well-worn sled trails. Snow was best, but apparently the mud was slippery enough to make for good fun. Messy, but from the shouts and squeals of laughter, good.
Aedan turned, walking backwards as he tugged her. "We, my Lady Kincade, are going to go...mud-sledding." The gleam in his eyes dared her to say no, to run off to sit on the sidelines.
If she did, he'd still go sledding, then go over after and give her a big hug. So really, she'd get muddy either way...she might as well have the fun that went along with it.

"No, my lady," Aedan said. "Nothing more to look for, no old friends to see, and no more dancing...though maybe later." He pulled on his mitts once more, then secured his hat and scarf. "And no, I'm not going to tell you what we're doing, not yet. You'll have to trust me."
Jenna rose a brow at his request for her to trust him. Coupled with that boyish grin she was a goner. She barely had a chance to pull her gloves back on before he had her hand in his again and was tugging her along. Not to fast but quick enough. He seemed so excited over whatever it was that it adequately distracted him.
Jenna took the time to try and think a little, her eyes focusing on their clasped hands. Even through the woolen layers she could feel the heat of his. If someone had told her a month ago she'd be running through the Cladan festival hand in hand with Aedan Cousland having...a wonderful time. She would have though they had been sniffing lyrium.
Yet here she was. Having more fun than she had in a long, long time. As Aedan had promised her worries and cares were away for now. They would be there tomorrow she was sure to greet her as they started traveling to Amaranthine. For now though Aedan worked to give her one day without them. To make her smile and laugh, and want more even though he kept himself from taking anything. Not once had she felt like he was trying to pressure her. It seemed the opposite really, like he was trying to grant her the room she had once requested.
They finally stopped and Jenna's attention snapped back to their surroundings. They were just outside of Highever proper, atop a huge hill where children were sliding down a mud chute on banged up shields.
Aedan turned, walking backwards as he tugged her, the biggest smile she'd seen on his face. "We, my Lady Kincade, are going to go...mud-sledding." That familiar gleam in his eyes that dared her to not try it.
Jenna eyed the hill before them, "I don't know...is this safe? We can hardly start the trip tomorrow if we have broken bones."
Looking about she saw there was only one shield not claimed by the children. A large kite shield that one of them could likely fit on well enough. "Look there's only one shield there."
One of the children gave a happy squeal as they went flying down the make shift slide. Jenna gave a small smile even as she wrinkled her nose at the mud. All the children were covered in it and a few were even throwing it around here and there. The sun having warmed things just enough through the day to keep the mud from freezing back into hardened dirt. It wouldn't last though of course, by tomorrow it would be rock solid again. Jenna thought it an amusing metaphor for how she felt right about then. Looser, like the mud instead of hardened like the rock she was suppose to be.

Aedan laughed at Jenna's question of whether it was safe. "Of course not. But it will be fun, that I can assure you."
"Look there's only one shield there." She sounded a little worried...but was that relief, too?
"One's all we need, Jenna. Come on!"
It took some tugging and some cajoling and some crooked-smiling, but Aedan got Jenna onto the shield-sled. He tucked himself in behind her, his long legs bent on either side of her. It was a snug fit to get his ass onto the metal, but they managed it. He tried very hard not to think about where Jenna was sitting...or the position itself...or what she was very firmly pressed against...
"Let's go!"
He pushed against the muddy ground, and he thought for a moment that this idea would just die a quick death at the top of the hill. The shield-sled didn't want to move. Maybe the lighter weight of the children was what made this work? Well, damn, this wasn't going to be...
Oh, there it went! Aedan smiled at the bit of movement, and shoved harder with both hands. And suddenly, like a hand reached up from the bottom of the hill and grabbed the sled, it jolted forward.
Aedan grabbed the edges of the shield, hoping to be able to steer it if necessary. He'd forgotten how fast sledding was. And it was even better on snow, especially when the sled trail had had time to freeze to a smooth, icy consistency. But the mud was proving plenty fast, with the bit of melt they had from the bright sun. Yes ser, fast indeed...
Really, really fast. And there was a really big bump coming up...
Steering didn't work. He grabbed Jenna, about to launch the two of them off the sled...
"Oh, shi—"
Up and over the bump they went. Coming back now, the shield-sled, front-heavy, went nose first into the muck and promptly catapulted Jenna and Aedan into the mudpit at the bottom of the hill that they should have sailed over cleanly...had their shield-sled not failed them.
Aedan slid along a fair ways, mud covering his face, his front, and his new hat, mitts and scarf. He scrambled to try to stop himself, and finally succeeded, then pushed himself into a sitting position. Scraping the mud from his eyes, he looked around for Jenna. He spotted her, not too far away, and half-ran, half-slid through the muck to get to her.
"Jenna, are you all right?" He reached down to help her up, but the shifting in balance led his footing to slip. After a couple of high kicks that—thankfully—missed the noblewoman, Aedan ended up flat on his back in the mud, laughing up at the blue sky stretching overhead.

How in the Maker's name had she let Aedan talk her into this? Had she lost her mind!? She should have at least insisted they go down one at a time but Aedan assured her they could ride together on the shield that was left. They barely fit on it. Jenna had to curl herself into a ball with Aedan's limbs surrounding her. That part was...rather nice. So she supposed a quick jaunt down a muddy hill wouldn't be so bad. Their weight should make things go slower since they pressed into the mud more.
Granted when the shield finally moved that was not reassuring in the least. Jenna moved her hands to Aedan's legs, squeezing to remind herself she wasn't on this rickety thing by herself. Was that a bump? Oh sweet Andraste a bump!?
Apparently Aedan had realized this as well for a pair of arms wrapped around Jenna. Her own hands reaching up and holding onto them as she closed her eyes and let out a frightened squeal when they launched.
Things did not improve when they landed. The nose crashing into the ground and jarring Jenna nicely before the pair of them went tumbling into a mud pit. She supposed she should be grateful that they had a soft landing but she was covered in cold mud now.
In spite of the instinct that wanted her to jump to her feet, Jenna stayed on the ground until she was sure her limbs were all in working order. Her butt hurt from landing on it before sliding on her side through the muck. Thankfully nothing was broken as she slowly got her hands under her and pushed up. Snorting and spitting to try and get the mud out of her nose and mouth.
"Jenna, are you all right?" He reached down to help her up, but the shifting in balance led his footing to slip. Jenna squeaked again and bowed her head, covering it just in case as Aedan landed on his back.
"Aedan!?" she said as she crawled over to check if he was alright. With how hard he'd landed just then she was sure he would have knocked the air out of his lungs. Instead he was laughing like a loon at the sky.
"Ah...think that was all funny huh. That scared me to death! I have mud in so many places I'll be spitting it for weeks!" she hissed with a glare though the corner of her mouth was kicking upwards a bit in an attempt to laugh with him. "Just had to get something new in my knickers here besides the famous frogs...Danny?"
The Danny part was deliberate teasing. It was nice to finally have some name to call him that got under his skin, much like Twig always got under hers.

Aedan propped himself up, still laughing. The sight of the noblewoman covered in mud—except for one of her cheekbones and temple—started the peals of laughter afresh. The glare and the admonition didn't bother him. She was hale enough to be scolding him, and mud would wash.
He could help her wash…
"Just had to get something new in my knickers here besides the famous frogs...Danny?"
Somehow, the nickname coming from her lips didn't bother him. He actually…kind of liked it. And no, mud is not what he wanted to get into her knickers right at this moment.
Maker, thinking about that was not a good idea, not when he wanted to keep some distance between them. Suddenly he could very clearly picture her straddling him on the floor of her sitting room…then kissing him fervently on his bed…
He leaned forward, not caring that she was covered in mud, not caring that he was. It didn't matter that they were surrounded by laughing children, that a dozen people or more could watch their every action. Everything narrowed down to just those flashing green eyes…
No pressure, Soap.
With an effort, and the tiniest bit of a sigh, he tucked the heat behind humor and reached over to her with a mud-covered mitten. "You missed a spot," he said, and swiped the muck across the cheekbone that had previously been unscathed.
Re: Fun in the Winter Sun [Semi-Open] « Reply #53 on Feb 10, 2011, 11:15am »
Jenna saw the heat jump in those eyes behind the humor. It kept sneaking in the at the oddest of times. After all right now she was filthy and snappy, how did that translate into something that would make a man look at her like that?
She didn't get much of a chance to ponder it though. Aedan seemed to give this little sigh before swiping a mud covered hand over her cheek. "You missed a spot,"
"Oh really?" Jenna said with an unamused look, though the corner of her mouth was twisting just a little. He wanted to play dirty after all.
She scooped up a fair bit of mud and threw it in one swing of her arm. She had been hoping to catch Aedan in the face but her aim was off. Instead it splattered across his front and onto his new scarf. She dearly hoped some dripped down his shirt from the scarf but couldn't tell if it would.
There was no helping the smile that crossed her face from ear to ear. Jenna wasn't sure why but there was something good about throwing the mud. Normally she would have hissed and likely taken the high road in an effort to paint Aedsn the child. Dignified adults didn't get in mud fights and if her family could see her they'd all likely think she'd lost her mind.
She'd forgotten what it was like to do something on impulse. To not think and just have a little fun. She'd had to be the serious one, the kill joy that reminded people to get to work for so long. She forgot there was more to life than that.
"You just missed so many places there. We'll just have to add another coat, like paint. The brown look is just so good on you too." Jenna said with a laugh before trying to bat her eye lashes in a comical innocent way. She couldn't keep that up though and simply giggled, trying to remember that her hands were a mess and she couldn't cover her mouth.

She wanted to laugh. He could see the amusement dancing in her eyes, even as she struggled to keep her composure suitably cranky. Jenna Kincade was not supposed to enjoy such childish things. How often had she scolded him for not being mature? At least once every time they'd encountered each other. He'd always liked how her temper made her eyes spark.
When she grabbed the handful of mud and flung it at him, he was a bit surprised. Pleasantly so, but surprised nonetheless. He wasn't sure where she'd been aiming, but the mud splattered onto his scarf, a few droplets snaking their way to the skin beneath. It was cold, but not as bad as snow, and he laughed a bit harder.
"Oh, playing dirty, are we?" He grinned, then scooped up his own handful.
"You just missed so many places there. We'll just have to add another coat, like paint. The brown look is just so good on you too." She batted her eyelashes, then gave up the attempt at coquettishness and giggled madly.
The giggle nearly did him in. Maker, it wasn't supposed to be a sound that had that reaction, was it? He wanted to groan. He wanted to pull her down into the mud and kiss her senseless. He wanted to make her promises, so many promises.
He swallowed them, the words that wanted to tumble out. The ones that would tell her that he would be there for her, whatever she needed, whatever the future brought. It was friendship. He'd shared similar words with Alistair, in the dark, by a campfire, the two of them alone against an insurmountable task. But it was more, too, much more, and he didn't want to know that. He didn't want to look too closely at what lay beneath the words; he wouldn't say them anyway, so what did it matter?
He dropped the mud, suddenly wanting to be away from here. The jovial mood was gone; he didn't want it to be, but it had been replaced by thoughts he wasn't ready to examine. Not yet.
"Well, my lady, I think it might be time for a bath. You're filthy." He forced a smile back into place, not realizing until then that his had dropped. "Unless you'd prefer to meander through the crowd like this? That would be a tale for the gossips. I know! We could go find Felicity and hug her." A genuine chuckle arose at the thought of Felicity squealing with dismay. "Or we could simply head back to the castle and get cleaned up. Your choice."

What did she do wrong? The question rolled about in her mind as Aedan dropped the mud in his hands. He was suppose to throw it at her. That's what he would have done normally. Instead that easy smile that he had been wearing most of the day had dissappeared, replaced by a look of...fear?
Jenna wanted to shake her head in confusion. What could Aedan possibly have to fear from her. He looked rather like that time with the cliff diving. Staring at a long fall and scared of it. Whatever it was it couldn't be her. He knew everything about her after all and had seen the best and worst of her.
"Well, my lady, I think it might be time for a bath. You're filthy." He said then forcing a smile back into place. Jenna dearly wanted to tell him to stop that. She preferred him angry or yelling at her to those fake and forced smiles he was required to have for some nobles.
"Unless you'd prefer to meander through the crowd like this? That would be a tale for the gossips. I know! We could go find Felicity and hug her." A genuine chuckle rose from him then making Jenna feel a little better. "Or we could simply head back to the castle and get cleaned up. Your choice."
Jenna giggled again, "Oh I can just imagine her shrieks. The problem with that is we would have to be covered in so much mud, just for those huge....tracts of land. The screaming though...would make it so worth it."

"Huge tracts of..." Aedan shook his head, laughing. "Maker's ass, Jenna. Where did you even hear such a saying? You know what? Never mind. I don't want to know."
With an effort, Aedan managed to get himself upright once more, and not fall back into the muck, which he chalked up in the win column. He offered his hand to Jenna, then helped the noblewoman out of the mudpit and away from the children enjoying sledding. He couldn't tell gender or coloring or race for any of them, so covered in mud were they.
Mud, the great equalizer.
He attempted to wipe some of it off Jenna's face, for real this time, but quickly gave it up as a lost cause. It was gooey, and sticky, and the only thing that would help would be a bath...hopefully one with multiple water changes.
A slight whine had him looking around for the source, and he quickly spotted Nu. A surprised snort of laughter burst from him as he took in the mabari's appearance. Ribbons covered the wardog—around his neck, ears, legs, everywhere little hands could tie them, in all sorts of girly colors, like pink and purple.
Nu whined again, a sort of please, Maker, help me! noise, and Aedan arched a brow. "Still want to adopt one? Or three?"
Oh, the noise the mabari made then was pathetic. Truly pathetic. Aedan took pity on him and walked over to start removing the ribbons. "At least you don't need—" He broke off, sniffing. "Maker—Nu, is that perfume?" It was awful, whatever it was. It reminded him of some of the nobles in Denerim, the ones who believed their status entitled them to only the most expensive Orlesian imports. Aedan had been tempted to tell one woman that the most expensive imported Orlesian eau de toilette she'd been wearing smelled like flowers dipped in shit. That was rather the scent Nu was sporting right now.
"That's it. Baths for the three of us. We'll be keeping the castle staff busy tonight." Aedan sighed. "Come on, then, let's go."
Re: Fun in the Winter Sun [Semi-Open] « Reply #57 on Feb 11, 2011, 2:10pm »
Like Aedan, Jenna couldn't help but laugh at Nu's appearance. She was surprised the war dog had allowed the children to do such things. Then again for all his fierceness on a battle field Nu was a puppy at heart. He liked playing with children, but said playing usually was with the squires of Highever from days gone by. Boys and girls that liked to rough house and throw sticks as far as they could for Nu to run after. Apparently he had run across a group of girls that were more interested in making him a pretty puppy. The perfume though was simply the icing on the cake but Jenna felt horrible for the Mabari. After all dogs had far more sensitive noses then humans and it reeked to her.
She helped Aedan get the ribbons off Nu, making it a point to scratch behind the dog's ears and tell him he was a good boy fro suffering through the attack of pink, purple, giggling girls, and smelly perfume.
She wondered if Gerry maybe had a good ham bone hiding somewhere....
"That's it. Baths for the three of us. We'll be keeping the castle staff busy tonight." Aedan sighed. "Come on, then, let's go."
As they all started walking Jenna frowned, her mind catching onto a hitch in Aedan's plan. "Um...Aedan it's Cladan. All the servants will be down at the festival till probably later. Except some guards on patrol here and there it's going to be empty."
Nu apparently did not like this thought and let out a whine. Jenna gave a sympathetic smile and patted his head. "Don't worry Nu, I'm sure Aedan and I can get you clean up. Then we can clean ourselves and our clothes up."
She pondered this thought again. The lack of their winter hats and the sun going down meant going back out would not be a good idea. Nothing would be dry till morning at the least, if then.
Jenna was very glad that Theodore knew she needed the armor. Likely the blacksmith would send someone up with it first thing in the morning, or come up himself. She just hoped nothing went wrong with her measurements.
"Well, once we're all cleaned up and I can see about making us some supper. Unless you would rather be left to your own devices?" she asked. She did not want to tread on toes after all. They'd been having such a wonderful time that while she didn't want it to end, she didn't want to force Aedan to endure her more than he wanted to.

The idea of him and Jenna cleaning up Nu…it wasn't a bad image, all told, but it wasn't doing much for his resolve to not pressure her, to keep his distance. He couldn't help but picture her, laughing as she had been earlier, wet hair draped over her shoulders and a soaked-through shirt clinging in all the right places…
She'd made up her mind, though, and he was a weak, weak man. He couldn't say no, as much as he knew he should. And she offered to cook him dinner on top of everything else?
"If you think you're up for the challenge. If left to my own devices, I'd probably just raid Gerry's larder and blame Nu."
The mabari shot him a scornful look and gave a bit of a growl, and Aedan smiled at him. "Joking, joking. Dinner sounds lovely, my lady. I'll have a few steaks and about three pounds of potatoes…" He smiled at Jenna's somewhat incredulous look. "That, unfortunately, is not another joke. Though I'll settle for a half-dozen sandwiches. That might be a bit more palatable to Gerry, anyway." His grin turned a bit rueful. "Seriously, whatever you'd like to make will be fine, as long as you make a lot of it."
He offered his mud-covered elbow for her mud-covered hand to take. "Shall we, my lady?"
